CHEMUSUSU-DAM-PIC

The Sh5.5 billion water project marks the accomplishments of one of the Millenium Development Goals of increasing water supply in the country and is the largest project undertaken in the Rift Valley region.

The 45 metres high dam with a capacity of of 12 million cubic metres of water is set to benefit over 600,000 people through various projects that include piped water supply, fishing, irrigation and energy production.

Residents of Eldama Ravine Town and parts of Koibatek will get empowered economically through the various activities after the completion of the project.

The project which was started by the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation (NWCPC) has started creating some impact on the locals.

The government is already using the water for some projects including Parkerra irrigation scheme in Marigat District with some locals also benefitting from the spill-over water from the dam.

During the construction of the dam, communities living upstream had raised concerns that they may not benefit from the project.

This led to signing of a memorandum of understanding for the construction of four water supply projects which are estimated to cost Sh36 million.
